Sundial - Red Bluff California's first weed dispensary is finally opening

Red Bluff, Calif.- Cannabis, weed, marijuana, kush- whatever your name for it is.. it'll be available in Red Bluff Saturday, December 3rd.

Action News Now spoke with the owner, Laythen Martinez about why he chose Red Bluff for Sundial Collective's third location.

"There's an underserved population of people in Red Bluff that go to Redding for Cannabis. You know there's nowhere from Sacramento to Redding that sell legal cannabis," Martinez said.

He said they were seeing about 125 requests for deliveries to Red Bluff every day, "Red Bluff should have it, they should be making the revenue on what we're already selling here, and it's a legal mature market. You know it's not a bad thing."

Martinez said he thinks more people will become comfortable with the idea of legal cannabis over time.

"The overwhelming majority of people want it here, either for tax revenues or having safe access to cannabis," he said.

Red Bluff local, Omar Carrillo says he welcomes cannabis in his community.

The Real Story of Humboldt California's ‘Murder Mountain’

"A scenic stretch of northern California wilderness is where 60 percent of marijuana is grown in the United States, and it's known as “Murder Mountain.” It’s not the climate or the soil that draws farmers to the area but the isolation. Humboldt County also has the highest rate of missing persons cases in the state, which is how it has become ground zero for danger in the cannabis industry."

"Humboldt County, California is infamously known as Murder Mountain.  It's the largest marijuana-producing county in the country, but it has a dark history and seedy underbelly, rampant with homicides and disappearances.  Five women have become the face of those gone missing, and they are known as the Humboldt Five.

In 1992, Jennifer Wilmer was the first to vanish.  She moved from Long Island and planned to enroll in classes, but the semester was already in-progress.  She began to waitress, but she quickly lost her job.  She relied in part on welfare as she struggled to get on her feet.  She moved to Trinity County with her boyfriend.  She left to hitchhike to nearby farm in September of 1993, and she was never seen again.

In 1997, Karen Mitchell disappeared in November.  She had moved to the area to live with her aunt, as she struggled to share a home with her birth mother.  They remained in close contact and planned to attend some college courses together.  Mitchell visited her aunt's shoe store in Bayshore Mall, then left for a shift at a local daycare.  Eye witness reports claim to have seen her entering a '76-'78 blue Sedan with a man who closely resembled Robert Durst.  Credit records put him in the area at this time, and he's known to have killed several other women.

Christine Walters was the third to disappear.  She vanished in 2008, a 23 year-old Wisconsin native.  She moved to the area on a whim, smitten by local New-Age and shamanistic neophytes.  She participated in a local ritual involving the psychedelic ayahuasca, which may have led to a separation from reality.  Late one night, she emerged from the woods, naked and covered in scratches, and she appeared on the doorstep of a nearby home.  Walters claimed she had been pursued, but she wouldn't reveal by whom.  After being hospitalized, she went to a local copy center to retrieve important documents for new identification.  She was last seen walking toward the DMV, disoriented and still wearing her pajamas.

In 2014, Sheila Franks disappeared from Eureka, California seven days before Danielle Bertolini.  James Eugene Jones was the last person to see her, and he claimed that she left for a walk at 8 AM and never returned.  Partial remains were discovered in a nearby waterway.

Danielle Bertolini also disappeared in 2014.  She moved from Maine to Humboldt County in 2010 after a difficult health complication.  She turned to drugs to cope with her trauma, and she fell in with the wrong crowd.  Late one night she called for a ride from the Swain's Flat area; she was picked up by James Eugene Jones, and she was never seen again.

Are these cases connected to one perpetrator, praying on these disadvantaged women for decades, or is this a result of the criminal elements in the community of Humboldt County?"

Arcata California - LADY BUDS Film Documentary Sneak Preview Coming

Arcata California - LADY BUDS SNEAK PREVIEW COMING

“LADY BUDS” – the highly anticipated feature documentary film about six courageous women transitioning to the licensed cannabis market – is planning a special weekend of Sneak Preview Community Screenings and Events on October 1st and October 2nd at 5:30pm at the Minor Theatre in Arcata, CA. Ahead of its scheduled US Premiere at the upcoming Mill Valley Film Festival, the filmmakers wanted to share the film with the community at the heart of the story first, and celebrate the local sheroes featured in the film.

“The journey of making “LADY BUDS” began in Humboldt in 2017, when I was invited to visit a cannabis farm for the first time. After spending a few weeks in the area and meeting some of the locals who had been cultivating for decades, I could see how imperative it was to document this moment of historic transformation. I was witnessing the impacts of legalization on a very personal level, through the eyes of some of the inspiring women who have been the backbone of the community. I knew this was an important story that no one seemed to be telling,” says Director Chris J. Russo.

Following the widely praised 2016 decision to legalize cannabis in California, six women emerge from the shadows to enter the new commercial industry. As farmers, entrepreneurs and activists, these modern-day pioneers find their initial optimism is quickly replaced with uncertainty and fear as the new legislation favors deep pocketed corporations. Those who shaped the foundations of the cannabis industry for decades soon find themselves struggling to fight for their piece of the American Dream in a market they helped create."

Humboldt County Supervisors pledge $1 million to help struggling cannabis farmers

Eureka California - The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved a $1 million spending plan Tuesday to help cannabis farmers struggling to make ends meet as the price of cannabis continues to fall.

The agenda item was brought forth by the County Administrative Office and staff working on Project Trellis, the county’s cannabis micro-grant, marketing and local equity program.

“The Humboldt County cannabis industry is at a critical moment in its history,” the staff report stated. “Cannabis businesses, particularly cultivators, are struggling as they transition from a market which has been illegal for more than 50 years to a heavily regulated, but legal market. The successful transition of cultivators from the previously illicit market is important in Humboldt County as the local economy is critically linked to the success of its own cannabis industry.”

“These pleas for aid and relief stem from the recent bottoming of the cannabis market where the price per pound is now less than the cost to cultivate, process, and distribute that product,” Adair said. “… Whereas your board has previously approved CARES Act funding and other COVID-related aid to the business and nonprofit community for the adverse impact of COVID-19 on those communities, cannabis businesses and cultivators have not been able to access any pandemic-related relief dollars because they’re derived from federal funding sources.”

Eureka Cannabis Company Revitalizes A Local Economy

Humboldt County, California is world renowned for producing some of the top tier cannabis strains. Socially conscious cannabis company Papa and Barkley, based in Eureka, is stimulating the local economy while utilizing locally grown strains in their product line.

The population of Humboldt is approximately 300,000, with about 28,000 people in Eureka. The town and the surrounding area has fallen on hard times since the logging industry, shipping and lumber companies have left the area. P&B is poised to become a significant employer in Humboldt along with Coast Seafoods and Fox Farms. The company is aware that hiring employees locally makes a positive impact.

Papa and Barkley began as a passion project, explains the company's congenial founder Adam Grossman, in his loft in Eureka's Buehne building, over oysters from Humboldt Bay, while a bartender mixes cannabis-infused cocktails.

Chico California cannabis committee has ordinance in the works

After 9 weeks, the committee has a good idea of the ordinance they want to propose to regulate recreational marijuana sales in the City of Chico.

CHICO, Calif. -
California voters said yes to recreational marijuana in 2016.
Nearly three years later, the City of Chico is getting ready to get on board.

"We have a massive debt crisis, an under-funded pensions crisis… to the extent that the city could have more money to clean up the streets and do things that would be a benefit to the residents, I think that would be a good thing," said Miles Rampel, lives in Chico.

9 weeks ago, a committee of community representatives from both sides of the issue started exploring what marijuana sales, production, and distribution would look like for Chico.
Teri Dubose represents the Downtown Chico Business Association.

"I think it's best that we start small and grow from there, based on how it's doing rather than starting really big and trying to reign things back in," Dubose said.

Some people in Chico say that's probably a good idea.

Redding gives a green light to first cannabis cultivator

10/12/18

Redding California - "Location, location, location.

Minutes before ratifying its objection to a cannabis cultivation business opening next to the Good News Rescue Mission, the Redding Planning Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved a similar operation on Innsbruck Drive in a largely industrial area.

The Planning Commission made quick work of the Innsbruck proposal, approving Pinnacle Cultivator’s use permit after nobody spoke for or against the commercial marijuana business on the city's east side, north of Highway 44.

It was a stark contrast to the commission’s Aug. 28 meeting, when Aleck Commercial Cultivation’s proposal for South Market Street drew opposition from the Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter that also operates addiction recovery programs for men and women.

After hearing those concerns, the Planning Commission at that meeting blocked the project, a decision it ratified 5-2 on Tuesday. Commissioners Michele Goedert and Randy Memeo dissented.

Among the other reasons the Planning Commission denied Aleck Commercial Cultivation’s use permit is the location is in a high-crime area and it’s close to homes and apartments.
Aleck Cultivation has appealed to the Redding City Council.

Meanwhile, Pinnacle Cultivators scored the city’s first use permit for a marijuana commercial cultivation business.

Before endorsing it, Commissioner Goedert recommended removing a condition requiring a facility processing food or drink products containing cannabis be required to connect to kitchen drainage fixtures.

“We don’t want to give the appearance at all that it could be anything other than cultivation,” Goedert said.

The condition was removed and the project passed.

Pinnacle Cultivators owner Kole Heston has said he wants to open in six months to a year. Heston owns the 2915 Innsbruck Drive building.

He has been cultivating and selling cannabis to dispensaries locally and across California for 10 years. When California voters made recreational marijuana legal in 2016, Heston saw an opportunity to grow his business.

A 2007 Pioneer High School graduate (he also attended Foothill High), Heston has said he got into the cannabis business for its healing qualities.

Pinnacle Cultivators will have 10 to 15 employees to start. But Heston envisions five to 10 years from now expanding into distribution and retail and employing 50 to 100 people."

Redding man's 4/20 surprise: $47,500 in fines over alleged pot violations

5/5/18

"A Redding man is on the hook for almost $50,000 after city code enforcement officials said they found numerous violations at his home — including over 400 marijuana plants — on April 20, a de facto holiday in cannabis culture.

Redding California Code Enforcement Supervisor Steve Willkomm said the pot at 30-year-old Benjamin Segan's Spaniel Court home was in the dining room, bedroom closet, an "entire bedroom" and the entire two-car garage. Residents who are allowed to grow can only have up to six plants. The house is some 333 feet from Boulder Creek Elementary School, Willkomm said.

Some of the pot was still growing, while some of it was drying or already harvested in plastic and glass containers, Willkomm said.

Meanwhile, Willkomm said there were also illegal alterations at the house, including an inoperable garage door with hardware removed, a sealed side door, plastic sheeting on interior walls, air conditioning equipment that was "larger than the main house system," an extra electrical panel and wiring in the garage, and a Co2 burner with propane tanks.

Willkomm said he fined Segan $47,500 for the zoning, building and pot violations at the home. He might also face criminal charges from law enforcement, Willkomm said.
Segan couldn't be reached for comment.

Willkomm said it's important to remember that all marijuana grows in the city — even medicinal ones — have to be indoors, and the grower has to have a license to grow and possibly also building permits."

Local Eureka cannabis company serves homeless for the holidays

Redwood News Eureka, California. (KIEM) In Eureka, the gift that keeps giving. A local cannabis company decided to ditch the shop and hit to streets all in the name of good fate.

H-F Raw and Uncut in Eureka set up shop on 4th Street this morning to hand out food, coffee and toiletries such as socks to those that are less fortunate.

David Vogelsang, President of H-F Raw and Uncut, shared that this is his 4th year serving the homeless and he once was on that path himself, so now, he and the crew gives back to their community and provides hope.

Humboldt’s Finest Raw and Uncut produces the highest quality live resin concentrate for the California market.  With techniques that have been perfected with over 15 years of experience, the proof of concept can be seen in the 7 High Times Cannabis Cup awards we have won since the fall of 2017.

– What is Live Resin? –
Live resin is a popular extraction that embodies the full essence of the plant, as it is derived from “fresh frozen” whole plants, thereby maintaining the full terpene and cannabinoid profiles.  Educated and experienced consumers often prefer live resin over other products because it is considered superior in potency and flavor. As consumers have become more educated about cannabis concentrates, sales of higher quality live resin have escalated.  We sell to those consumers via dispensaries through our distribution channel and utilizing our large social media network to drive consumers into stores to ask for our products.
