MONDAY, May 15, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Smoking cigarettes has long been linked to peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition where the buildup of plaque narrows arteries and limits blood flow to the legs or arms.
Now, a new study suggests that marijuana may have a similar impact, after finding that users had three times the risk of developing PAD.
Although the study is preliminary and doesn’t determine whether the impact is all from smoking weed or other popular methods of using the drug, such as eating cannabis-infused gummies, it may be a red flag for users and could be something their doctors should ask about to gauge risk factors for their patients.
“Marijuana users should seek early evaluation by a health care professional if they have symptoms such as leg pain while walking, slower/no hair growth and coldness in the leg as there seems to be an increased risk for developing PAD in this patient population,” said study authors Dr. Hirva Vyas from Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey and Dr. Harsh Jain, a resident with the Montefiore Health System in New York City.
Red Bluff, Calif.- Cannabis, weed, marijuana, kush- whatever your name for it is.. it'll be available in Red Bluff Saturday, December 3rd.
Action News Now spoke with the owner, Laythen Martinez about why he chose Red Bluff for Sundial Collective's third location.
"There's an underserved population of people in Red Bluff that go to Redding for Cannabis. You know there's nowhere from Sacramento to Redding that sell legal cannabis," Martinez said.
He said they were seeing about 125 requests for deliveries to Red Bluff every day, "Red Bluff should have it, they should be making the revenue on what we're already selling here, and it's a legal mature market. You know it's not a bad thing."
Martinez said he thinks more people will become comfortable with the idea of legal cannabis over time.
"The overwhelming majority of people want it here, either for tax revenues or having safe access to cannabis," he said.
Red Bluff local, Omar Carrillo says he welcomes cannabis in his community.
AN UNCOMPROMISING DEDICATION TO PERFECTION SETS EMBER VALLEY CALIFORNIA CANNABIS PRODUCER APART FROM YOUR AVERAGE FLOWER BRANDS.
"From the taste and appearance to the aroma and experience, these are just a few things that make up good quality weed.
We know you’re constantly on the hunt for the best possible flower options that remain unmatched. No one wants to smoke reggie in the age of legalization.
That’s where Ember Valley comes in. It’s a brand that’s blazing the trail as true perfectionists in a sea of average cannabis flower, thanks to an uncompromising dedication to perfection.
The result is a surprising distinction between average weed and flawless cannabis flower, something Ember Valley is proud to produce time and again.
If it’s not up to Ember Valley’s standards, it won’t make the shelves. It’s that simple."
"A scenic stretch of northern California wilderness is where 60 percent of marijuana is grown in the United States, and it's known as “Murder Mountain.” It’s not the climate or the soil that draws farmers to the area but the isolation. Humboldt County also has the highest rate of missing persons cases in the state, which is how it has become ground zero for danger in the cannabis industry."
"Humboldt County, California is infamously known as Murder Mountain. It's the largest marijuana-producing county in the country, but it has a dark history and seedy underbelly, rampant with homicides and disappearances. Five women have become the face of those gone missing, and they are known as the Humboldt Five.
In 1992, Jennifer Wilmer was the first to vanish. She moved from Long Island and planned to enroll in classes, but the semester was already in-progress. She began to waitress, but she quickly lost her job. She relied in part on welfare as she struggled to get on her feet. She moved to Trinity County with her boyfriend. She left to hitchhike to nearby farm in September of 1993, and she was never seen again.
In 1997, Karen Mitchell disappeared in November. She had moved to the area to live with her aunt, as she struggled to share a home with her birth mother. They remained in close contact and planned to attend some college courses together. Mitchell visited her aunt's shoe store in Bayshore Mall, then left for a shift at a local daycare. Eye witness reports claim to have seen her entering a '76-'78 blue Sedan with a man who closely resembled Robert Durst. Credit records put him in the area at this time, and he's known to have killed several other women.
Christine Walters was the third to disappear. She vanished in 2008, a 23 year-old Wisconsin native. She moved to the area on a whim, smitten by local New-Age and shamanistic neophytes. She participated in a local ritual involving the psychedelic ayahuasca, which may have led to a separation from reality. Late one night, she emerged from the woods, naked and covered in scratches, and she appeared on the doorstep of a nearby home. Walters claimed she had been pursued, but she wouldn't reveal by whom. After being hospitalized, she went to a local copy center to retrieve important documents for new identification. She was last seen walking toward the DMV, disoriented and still wearing her pajamas.
In 2014, Sheila Franks disappeared from Eureka, California seven days before Danielle Bertolini. James Eugene Jones was the last person to see her, and he claimed that she left for a walk at 8 AM and never returned. Partial remains were discovered in a nearby waterway.
Danielle Bertolini also disappeared in 2014. She moved from Maine to Humboldt County in 2010 after a difficult health complication. She turned to drugs to cope with her trauma, and she fell in with the wrong crowd. Late one night she called for a ride from the Swain's Flat area; she was picked up by James Eugene Jones, and she was never seen again.
Are these cases connected to one perpetrator, praying on these disadvantaged women for decades, or is this a result of the criminal elements in the community of Humboldt County?"
HUMBOLDT – A campaign to suspend Humboldt County’s cannabis excise tax is underway and a member of the Board of Supervisors has said the request is already being actively discussed.
In a press release, the Suspend Measure S campaign asks the county to “forgive” the October 2021 excise tax payment, “waive” the next payment due in March and to suspend the tax for a year following that.
During the suspension, the campaign asks that a “new equitable and fair tax” be devised.
The county has recognized that the local cannabis industry is struggling amid unfavorable market conditions. Last October’s tax payment has been deferred to the end of May and additional grant opportunities have been added to the county’s Project Trellis assistance program.
But cannabis farmers say they’re close to the edge of insolvency.
When the Board of Supervisors discussed cannabis regulation issues at their Jan. 11 meeting, cannabis farm owner and consultant Mika Cook said the county’s longstanding cannabis farming tradition is facing an existential threat.
“It seems really scary right now with the state of the industry as it is because we might not survive – it feels like we are in an extinction event, period,” she said. “And if we, as small farmers who really do care passionately about protecting the environment don’t make it, who’s gonna come in to replace us?”

Arcata California - LADY BUDS SNEAK PREVIEW COMING
“LADY BUDS” – the highly anticipated feature documentary film about six courageous women transitioning to the licensed cannabis market – is planning a special weekend of Sneak Preview Community Screenings and Events on October 1st and October 2nd at 5:30pm at the Minor Theatre in Arcata, CA. Ahead of its scheduled US Premiere at the upcoming Mill Valley Film Festival, the filmmakers wanted to share the film with the community at the heart of the story first, and celebrate the local sheroes featured in the film.
“The journey of making “LADY BUDS” began in Humboldt in 2017, when I was invited to visit a cannabis farm for the first time. After spending a few weeks in the area and meeting some of the locals who had been cultivating for decades, I could see how imperative it was to document this moment of historic transformation. I was witnessing the impacts of legalization on a very personal level, through the eyes of some of the inspiring women who have been the backbone of the community. I knew this was an important story that no one seemed to be telling,” says Director Chris J. Russo.
Following the widely praised 2016 decision to legalize cannabis in California, six women emerge from the shadows to enter the new commercial industry. As farmers, entrepreneurs and activists, these modern-day pioneers find their initial optimism is quickly replaced with uncertainty and fear as the new legislation favors deep pocketed corporations. Those who shaped the foundations of the cannabis industry for decades soon find themselves struggling to fight for their piece of the American Dream in a market they helped create."
Eureka California - The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved a $1 million spending plan Tuesday to help cannabis farmers struggling to make ends meet as the price of cannabis continues to fall.
The agenda item was brought forth by the County Administrative Office and staff working on Project Trellis, the county’s cannabis micro-grant, marketing and local equity program.
“The Humboldt County cannabis industry is at a critical moment in its history,” the staff report stated. “Cannabis businesses, particularly cultivators, are struggling as they transition from a market which has been illegal for more than 50 years to a heavily regulated, but legal market. The successful transition of cultivators from the previously illicit market is important in Humboldt County as the local economy is critically linked to the success of its own cannabis industry.”
“These pleas for aid and relief stem from the recent bottoming of the cannabis market where the price per pound is now less than the cost to cultivate, process, and distribute that product,” Adair said. “… Whereas your board has previously approved CARES Act funding and other COVID-related aid to the business and nonprofit community for the adverse impact of COVID-19 on those communities, cannabis businesses and cultivators have not been able to access any pandemic-related relief dollars because they’re derived from federal funding sources.”
Marijuana can improve libido and sexual satisfaction, a study has revealed.
A paper published in the Sexual Medicine journal has found a direct link between a moderate use of cannabis prior to sex and a significant increase in arousal and strength of orgasm.
Researchers studied the sex lives of almost 400 participants who volunteered intimate information about their private lives and use of marijuana.
From the study, 176 women said they used cannabis, often prior to sexual activity.
“Among those who reported using marijuana before sex, 68.5 percent stated that the overall sexual experience was more pleasurable, 60.6 percent noted an increase in sex drive, and 52.8 percent reported an increase in satisfying orgasms," the study reported.
Edibles. CBD oil. Buds. When using medical marijuana for pain relief, the strain, dose, and route of administration can make a difference.
Plus, a word about hemp.

A growing body of clinical research and a history of anecdotal evidence support
the use of cannabis for the relief of some types of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain, and spasticity (ie, stiffness or tightness) associated with multiple sclerosis.
In a recent comprehensive review of existing data on the health effects of cannabis and cannabinoids, the National Academies of Science concluded that adult patients with chronic pain who were treated with cannabis/cannabinoids were more likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in pain symptoms.
They rated these effects as “modest.”
Studies also suggest some efficacy for cancer-related pain, migraines, and fibromyalgia, and other pain conditions.
However, how different species, routes of administration, and doses differ in their effect is less clear, and more research is needed.
The strain, the quality, the consistency, the freshness, the flavor, the scent, the benefits….it all starts with the flower!

Humboldt County, California is world renowned for producing some of the top tier cannabis strains. Socially conscious cannabis company Papa and Barkley, based in Eureka, is stimulating the local economy while utilizing locally grown strains in their product line.
The population of Humboldt is approximately 300,000, with about 28,000 people in Eureka. The town and the surrounding area has fallen on hard times since the logging industry, shipping and lumber companies have left the area. P&B is poised to become a significant employer in Humboldt along with Coast Seafoods and Fox Farms. The company is aware that hiring employees locally makes a positive impact.
Papa and Barkley began as a passion project, explains the company's congenial founder Adam Grossman, in his loft in Eureka's Buehne building, over oysters from Humboldt Bay, while a bartender mixes cannabis-infused cocktails.
"Our Releaf line was inspired by a son’s mission to ease his elderly father’s immobilizing back pain A condition that forced the family to place “Papa” in hospice. The original balm formulated in our founder’s kitchen eased his father’s pain and, in conjunction with other therapies, got Papa off hospice and able to return home.
Our Company is named after Papa and the family’s loyal pit bull, Barkley, symbolizing the unconditional love and support that we hope to capture in the products that we make today."
Papa & Barkley’s foundation is based on quality first, clean products, and transparency.
From organic farm practices to our whole plant infusion process, we say no to solvents
and yes to clean ingredients because you deserve the best.

After 9 weeks, the committee has a good idea of the ordinance they want
to propose to regulate recreational marijuana sales in the City of
Chico.
CHICO, Calif. - California voters said yes to recreational marijuana in 2016.
Nearly three years later, the City of Chico is getting ready to get on board.
"We have a massive debt crisis, an under-funded
pensions crisis… to the extent that the city could have more money to
clean up the streets and do things that would be a benefit to the
residents, I think that would be a good thing," said Miles Rampel, lives
in Chico.
9 weeks ago, a committee of community representatives
from both sides of the issue started exploring what marijuana sales,
production, and distribution would look like for Chico.
Teri Dubose represents the Downtown Chico Business Association.
"I think it's best that we start small and grow from
there, based on how it's doing rather than starting really big and
trying to reign things back in," Dubose said.
Some people in Chico say that's probably a good idea.
"Mike Rubin lives on borrowed time. The 40-year-old northeast
Pennsylvanian native was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2010. In
2011, Rubin endured four months of brutal chemotherapy, only to have the
tumors in his neck and shoulders return three months later.
His doctors recommended another round of chemo, this time combined
with radiation. But Rubin had other ideas. The first round of chemo had
ravaged his body and mind. After researching all of his options on the
internet, he rejected sound mainstream medical advice and elected to
treat his cancer with cannabis.
“They thought I was being an idiot,” he told me last week, sitting in
the small living room in the modest south Redding rental he shares with
his wife. “I thought I was doing the right thing.”
A powerful political group is forming in Redding California,
Its no secret, residents feel strongly about the lack of transparency in Redding and Shasta County government. Resident veterans have nearly died in our present jail facility not receiving the proper medical care.
More people homeless sleep on Redding streets and sidewalks all over town, growing mental health issues are not being properly addressed. Its an emergency, a low barrier homeless shelter is desperately needed.
Anderson Police Chief Johnson "Stalag" homeless "solution"
Anderson police 'embrace' pigdom during Chinese Year of the Pig
Say NO to Anderson California police Chief Johnson and his proposal for a transitional rehabilitation center in Shasta County. Seems anything but Christian....even Anti Christ since afederal court affirmscities can’t criminalize homelessness.
“The idea of forcing homeless people into detention facilities through
some kind federally led, law enforcement/military style effort is also
inhumane and grotesque, and does not appear to have been thought out so
hopefully that is not actually the strategy.”
Redding Downtown Post Office Completly Fenced Off To Homeless
And somebody again please remind me how Red Bluff police can afford officer body cameras and Redding police department cannot ?
And it seems like with an expanding coffer of ever growing Redding and Shasta County cannabis tax revenues and marijuana sold one must ask no jail funding there ? We of course need more police and fire staff.
Perhaps you are concerned with other local problems. Folks who feel their are far more pressing issues in our community...
